Tapeworms In Kittens |
Tapeworm is a parasite that infects the digestive system and commonly attacks humans and animals
This worm is shaped like a ribbon with a length of about 10 cm to 60 cm and has a segmented body structure with each segment containing eggs.
Cats are infected with tapeworms while swallowing lice. The worm eggs contained in the lice then hatch and grow inside the cat's body.
Adult tapeworms in the body of the cat then lay eggs and released into the environment through cat feces.
Tapeworms require at least two hosts to survive, wherein the intermediate host carries the larvae.

Source of Infection
The main source of tapeworm infection is through the eggs of the tapeworm (cysticercoid) present in the lice that the cat eats. Eggs then hatch in the intestine to then grow into adult tapeworms.- Tapeworm eggs can also enter the body when a cat licks or wounds (claws) itself.
- Cats can also swallow tapeworms when eating raw meat, raw fish, and dead animals.
- Cats can also be infected with tapeworms during treatment sessions.
- Cats may be infected with tapeworms when beds and their municipal premises are not cleaned.
- Lice found on the home carpet have the potential to become a source of transmission.
- Breastfeeding mothers may transmit an infection to their children.
Type
Cats are usually infected by five types of tapeworm species. Each species infects cats differently.- Dipylidium caninum is the most common type of tapeworm found in cats. This species infects when cats swallow fleas that have tapeworm larvae in them.
- When cats eat prey that has been infected with Taenia taeniaeformis species, then the cat may have the same infection.
- Echinococcus infects cats when eating raw or rotten meat.
- Dibothriocephalus latus and Spirometra mansonoides infect cats if they eat raw freshwater fish or snakes from the water.
Consequences
Tapeworm infection in cats is not a serious problem. This infection causes loss of appetite, energy loss, diarrhea, and anemia. The tapeworm lives in the cat's intestine and eats the food consumed by the cat.
Infection damages the abdominal wall and causes consistent blood loss.
Prevention and Treatment
Step 1
- It is important to bring the cat to the vet if you observe the symptoms of tapeworm.
- The tapeworm body segment is found in the feces and feathers around the cat's anus.
- This segment of the tapeworm often resembles grains of rice and can be seen with the naked eye.
Step 2
- Although veterinarians can clearly identify worm segments, they may still perform stool examinations to confirm.
Step 3
- Give the medicine the veterinarian prescribes. You may see dead worms in cat feces, but not to worry because this condition is quite normal.
Step 4
- To prevent further attacks, start taking action to control the lice.
- Try to stop cats from hunting and eating small animals that cause infestations.
- After the treatment of intestinal worms, clean the dirt box, carpet, and cat bed to prevent recurrence of infection. Cat litter should be removed as soon as possible.
